RENAISSANCE + BAROQUE ART
Horses in art flourished during the Renaissance along with the freedom to depict those images with a more pure exposition of structure and appearance. The horses' function during the Renaissance and Baroque period was the center of transportation, however, it was also an object of beauty and power. Sketches and paintings of horses were completed to show the prominent musculature of a horse's body. They were mounted by kings and leading soldiers of the century, and then were painted in portraits for those figures. For example, a portrait of Charles V was painted on horseback, to show his power and stature in the political world. Horses were also depicted in their natural state, for example in the composition "Horse Attacked by a Lion" the artist George Stubbs exemplifies incredible athleticism and emotion through body language and expression.
